Maintaining your home can often be a burden to homeowners. Very few of us want to give up our free time to repair a shingle or climb up on a ladder to repaint the exterior of our house. However, maintaining one’s home can’t be avoided forever. Repainting your home is one of those big tasks that requires attention every few years. Nevertheless, you have a wonderful solution. You have the option of repainting your home or replacing it with beautiful vinyl siding.

The Home Remodelers Group®, a family owned and operated home improvement company since 1964, recommends premium vinyl siding to give your home the long lasting and durable care it deserves.

What is vinyl siding?

Vinyl siding is comprised of PVC (Poly Vinyl Chloride) resins. Combined with acrylic components, which help resist denting and exposure to extreme weather conditions, and Titanium dioxide and other chemicals, which help protect the color from fading and chalking, the durability, flexibility and color retention of vinyl siding increases. Color pigments are mixed with the PVC resins to give vinyl siding a deep, penetrating color that goes all the way through the material. Because it isn’t just coating the surface, scratches and blemishes are not noticeable and it never needs painting.

Why vinyl siding works best

Painting your home used to last for approximately 10 years. Unfortunately, the paint was formerly made with poisonous chemicals. These chemicals gave paint a long-lasting and durable effect but also resulted in injury to children and animals who consumed the paint chips. As a result, paint manufacturers were required to remove most of these chemicals from their formulas, so repainting is required much more often. With wood siding, the paint eventually cracks or peels off, fades or even rots. Steel or aluminum siding can get scratched, dented or become rusty. (Source: www.hart2hart.net/siding_facts.htm)

According to Tim Carter at askthebuilder.com, you have about 4 years in between exterior paint jobs. Thus the cost of painting increases exponentially. For example, the estimated cost to paint your home is $1,200. Or estimate about 20 gallons of paint to provide 2 coats to an average size house, without labor. With inflation, repainting every 4 years would add up to approximately $14,550 over the next 20 years. (Source: www.vinylsiding.com)

Compared to the cost of years of repainting, vinyl siding is a wise investment. Replacing siding on a home is among the top ten remodeling projects in terms of overall payback. Based on the 2006 Cost vs. Value Report, homeowners in New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania typically get a 92% return on their vinyl siding investment. The market value of low maintenance homes has increased dramatically because most homeowners want to spend their time relaxing in their home rather than working on it.

Vinyl siding can range between $1.00 – $2.50 per square foot, which costs a homeowner an estimated average of about $9,000. It is the less expensive alternative to wood or aluminum siding. With it’s easy cleaning, with soap and water, overall durability in any weather and a high return on investment; vinyl siding is a definite and beautiful benefit that adds instant curb appeal to your home.

To The Point

The Home Remodelers Group® highly recommends vinyl siding for your home for these reasons:

• Vinyl siding is made to look like real wood and it never needs painting.

• Available in a wide selection of colors and styles to fit your individual needs.

• Easy clean up – just spray with a garden hose and you’re done.

• Premium vinyl siding will not warp, dent, corrode or show scratches.

• Added insulation can save money on heating and cooling costs.

With premium vinyl siding added to your home, you have more time to enjoy the things you love doing. And your home continues to look freshly painted year after year.

Vinyl siding is a common siding. It is popular with many homeowners because it does not require painting. On the other hand, it is still a relatively high maintenance product for other reasons.

Vinyl siding is popular, and a satisfactory siding, but it is more prone to mechanical damage than most other sidings. It is vulnerable to dings and damage from lawn mowers, weed eaters, baseballs, etc. As the ads say, it might not require painting, but as the material ages, and receives more ultraviolet exposure from the sun, it gets brittle.

Heat is another issue. Often homebuyers will see a wavy pattern to the vinyl and ask a realtor what the problem is. This very noticeable problem is usually apparent at a patio or a deck and the answer is, almost always, that someone placed a hot barbecue against the wall. The vinyl melted – remember that vinyl is plastic so it melts at a comparatively low temperature. Suppliers of vinyl siding will tell you that, in the summer months when outdoor barbecuing is popular, they sell lots of replacement product. Experienced firefighters have told me that, often, homes clad with vinyl siding – located near homes that have major fires – also end up with warped and shriveled siding that is melted and requires immediate replacement. Homeowners, purchasing homes with vinyl siding, need to realize that even though it is advertised as never requiring a paint job it is, by no means, a maintenance free product.

As you begin a new home improvement project it is important to brainstorm and figure out exactly when will suit you and your home best. When you are installing vinyl windows or a solid hurricane window as replacement windows in your home then you have several factors to think about. Do you want excellent ventilation, to improve your home security, additional privacy, or would you like to control the light better?

You will also want to make sure that your window selection fits in well with the look and feel of your home. You can improve your home’s “curb appeal,” but make the right window selection. When people drive by your home, don’t you want them to think it’s the prettiest on the block? This also increases the value of your home. Make sure to check your city’s building codes to make sure your choices are in line with the city’s specifications.

You can make your replacement windows a do it your self project to keep costs low. You can check out different websites that offer advice and instructions for almost any window you choose.

Here are some important tips:

1. Make sure you pick a window that has a good warranty, your windows should last over 40 years.
2. Make sure you pick something with low e glass.
3. If you live in a cold climate than buy a double glazed window or one that is gas-filled for energy efficiency purposes.
4. Read reviews on different kind of windows to make sure you are choosing the best one. If you get a good name brand then you may also pay for that price. You might also find great quality is a smaller brand name.

Window replacement materials

Windows used to just be glass that was glazed into a sash, but nowadays a window can be almost an entire system.

For instance a single pane window don’t insulate much and are used more in warmer regions. A double plan window has air between the glass and this can let less energy through the glass. You can also try double paned that has argon gas between the glass for even better insulation. You can also get windows that have glass that has been coated with a low emissivity film or (low e). This will also keep your home more energy efficient.

You can get your sash made in wood or in wood that is clad with vinyl or aluminum, or a combo of vinyl and fiberglass. Wood is great because you can trim it down for the best fit. You can also get the aluminum or vinyl addition for a warm and humid region. If you live near the beach or on a lake then you should choose vinyl. They are also great for low maintenance.

You may also want to choose tinted glass for instance or a beveled edge for that bit of class. You can also choose between the types of film that you would like to apply on your glass. A double pan window will also cut down on noise pollution if you live in a busy area.

The vinyl railing manufacturers have started giving lifetime warranties of the product. The confidence of the manufacturers comes from the fact that the product maintains its look for a long time and a life expectancy of up to 20 years is a norm. The life of redwood and cedar is about 10 to 12 years.

Advantages Of Vinyl Railings

There are many advantages of vinyl railings over wood railings. The advantages can be summarized as below,

1. As stated above, the life of vinyl railings is more than that of wood railing or decking.

2. The maintenance requirement of vinyl railings is minimal. As compared to the wooden railings, they need no waxing or polishing regularly. The only care that you will need is washing with mild detergent to remove dirt dust and mildew that is accumulated over the year.

3. The degradation due to atmospheric conditions is absent. The wood railings deteriorate over years and lose the original look

4. The degradation due sunlight can be catered by selecting UV protected railing material so that the effects of UV rays from sun and damage due to this is avoided. There is also no damage due to rain. The wood on the other hand, can get severely damaged during rains and once the damage starts in wood it, spreads

5. Minor scratches do not show on surface of vinyl railings. If wood is scratched, it shows and need to be waxed or polished once again to that the scratches are covered.

6. It comes in easy to use forms and unlike wood; it does not have to be worked on heavily. This is advantage for the DIY enthusiast.

Economical solution over a time frame Vinyl Railing

The initial cost of vinyl railings may be comparable to the cost of wooden railings. When you consider that the vinyl does not need and sanding, painting, scraping, calking, and replacement, you can see that the vinyl railings can become cost effective solution. If you add the warranties that manufacturers offer for vinyl railings, you get not only a product of lasting vale but also the peace of mind, and that I think is the biggest advantage.

Vinyl flooring, also called resilient flooring, requires a smooth surface to perfectly cover the surface. Resilient means that is designed to repel the weight of objects that hits it. It is available either in tile or sheet depending on the need. It has been found out that the solid vinyl is more durable than vinyl composition. Further, there are three basic categories namely homogenous, inlaid, and layered composite.

Cleaning is the most important task when the living room is covered with vinyl. The first step to cleaning is to make sure that the area is well ventilated to avoid accumulating moisture from the damp mop that will be used in the clean-up process. Next is to choose a floor cleaner manufactured only for vinyl flooring. It must not require more such as heating before it can be used so that the person can save time and effort. . A vacuum cleaner is not advisable to use since it may scratch the floor. Then spray a small amount of cleaner to the floor and wipe it with the mop. A sponge is also recommended since it absorbs water and dirt easily. Warm water is suggested to be used over cold water. Continue spraying and mopping the floor until there are no more residues that can be seen. Lastly, make sure that there are no soap residues from the cleaner and the surface is dry enough to avoid slipping.

Next to cleaning is the maintenance task. The thickness of the vinyl flooring determines its performance and the amount of maintenance needed. The time and temperature upon installation must be within accepted standards. It is important that the temperature is just right so that the adhesives won’t tear and will work properly. For atleast five days, there should be no rolling of heavy objects for the position of the newly glued vinyl might change. Marks of compressed adhesive will be permanent so anything that may cause this must be avoided. For the day that the vinyl flooring is installed, all seamed areas must be protected and no one should walk on it.

Regular maintenance includes simple vacuuming and washing occasionally with a floor cleaner is done every week to remove accumulated dirt and dust. Sometimes, the rough surface of the vinyl tend to gather dirt more than those smooth ones. However, the spills like soda that leave stains must be immediately wiped off to avoid staining that will damage the vinyl’s beauty. There must be non-staining rugs that are placed to sections that are prone to spill over or anything that causes stain to prevent staining too.

Once a year, stripping is done to remove the soap build up made by the normal cleaning. When losing shine, a polish specially made for vinyl flooring is used to recover its shine. Being very careful when moving objects such as sofas and cabinets is a must for the movement may cause scratches. These scratches can make the dirt stay on the holes made. This is why when moving something; it is advised to cover the floor with plywood to avoid having scratches. In addition, moisture beneath the vinyl flooring must be removed. It is much difficult to clean moisture than removing stains.
